The Sapito Amor: Colombia's Secret Love Frog (a Freaky Frog News EXCLUSIVE)
Dendrobates leucomelas, the Sapito Minero, on sand near a green leafthe Sapito Minero

Hellooooo Randiphiles!!! Oh boy do I have a frog-tastic update for you! For today's ribbeting [read: riveting] story, I've got some local lore on an amazing frog, nestled deep in Eastern Colombia. I'm sure many of you are keenly aware of the Dendrobates leucomelas (yellow-banded poison dart frog). Did you know in Colombia, they call it "sapito minero"?!?! That translates to little miner frog. Now, I know that some of you, especially those with a fondness for Dendrobates, are thinking "Lisa, why the frick are you associating this frog with Colombia when it's rarely found there and more common in other parts of South America??". Well dear reader, that is because Freaky Frog News is unafraid of going where other blogs dedicated to our beloved critters WON'T — *cough* Factual Frogs *cough*. "Get to the point Lisaaaa".

Fine! The reason I bring up Colombia is because rumor has it the Sapito Minero has a legendary cousin — the Sapito Amor. According to local villagers, the Sapito Amor looks nearly identical to the Dendrobates leucomelas, but has a slightly more golden hue, and a stare that oozes sweetness. Woah! Get this — according to some, the Sapito Amor presents itself to couples who are deeply in love. Some say that if the Sapito Amor visits a couple, it will bless them with eternal love, devotion, and happiness. I guess that's where the "amor" part comes from (I know, I know, nothing gets past me right?).

So what do you think? Is this just a frogtastical Colombian tale, or is there a magical love frog out there? I'll leave it up to you, dear reader. As for me? Let's just say if I'm ever in Colombia, and I ever have a boyfriend, I'll be keeping my ear out for a faint ribbet that exudes love.
P.S. — a message to Marcus Marcus, I know you are probably reading this. Please do not bother making a response post. I can already imagine the words "Lisa, there is no factual evidence supporting the existence of this ‘Sapito Amor’." I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK. You said the same thing about the Savannah Ghost Frog, the Providence Prince Toad, and even the Little Lilac Frog of Rochester, NY. I bet you don't believe the Coquí is real because the idea of a magical singing frog is too much for your tiny brain to handle. GOSH!

the golden hue detail is giving me chills, this fits so well with the "gold = blessing" pattern i've seen in other south american amphibian folklore. sending you my notes

Lisa, there is no factual evidence supporting the existence of this "Sapito Amor." I looked into the regional folklore index and found zero primary sources. I'm not trying to start anything, I just think readers deserve to know what's documented and what's a story someone told you at a hostel.
